Summary and Conclusion
Summary and Conclusion
So far I have looked at a lot of areas of magazines to help me create the perfect set up on mine. The first step I took was doing 5 textual analyses’ for the front cover, contents page and double page spread of different music magazines. This helped me because I could see exactly what different genres there are and how they are all laid out with a mixture of colour schemes. Also I could look at the content more closely and see what language features were used. This is important so that I have interesting content in my magazine and readers will be attracted.
I used the 2 questionnaires that looked at target audience, layout and content so I could see what exactly the audience was and what they wanted. I also made graphs for all of the questions so I could see exactly what proportion of the audience liked what. The last thing that I have done so far is 2 mood boards featuring front covers and contents pages so that people can see different genres together. Wednesday, 14 November 2012

Understanding Genre in Music Magazines
Understanding Genre in Music Magazine
Genre.
Definition- Is that which defines a 'type' by its characteristics or in the form of media texts by shared codes and conventions.
In music magazines Genre is a specific target audience. There are a few of the genre's I have recongised.
POP - e.g. Top of the pops
Deffinition- music of general appeal to teenagers; a bland watered-down version of rock'n'roll with more rhythm and harmony and an emphasis on romantic love.
INDIE ROCK- e.g. NME
Definition- Indie rock is a genre of rock music that originated in the United Kingdom and the United States in the 1980s.
DRUM and BASS- e.g. Bass Music Magazine
Definition- Drum and bass(D&B) is a type of electronic dance music which emerged in the mid 1990s. The genre is characterized by fast breakbeats, with heavy bass and sub-bass lines.

Textual Analysis Double-Page Spread, KERRANG Mag
Double-Page Spread
Layout.
The way this double-page spread has been layed out is drawing my attention to Billy Joel as he is in the middle and is stood with wide eyes and is holding a CD. the ratio of text to image i feel is about 30:70, this is because there are 3 members of this band and they have all been featured on this page. In this double-page spread they have used subheadings for you to know what to look for, if your looking for something particular about green day you just have you find the right subheading and it will tell you.
Text.
The type of words the have used on this double page spread are the words that you would have in a conversation, they are informal. they aren't words that would be used in a letter so they aren't formal they are casual. The content of this story is about how they are getting old and how they might be getting to the end of there run in the music industry but then again they may continue on till the are ancient.
Image.
The way the images have been been put together is the way they would stand if the were on the stage doing a gig, Billy is in the middle and the other two are on the other sides. The dominant photo on this double-page spread is the on in the centre of both pages as it has billy Joel. The other images that have been used for this double page spread are the other members of the band, they have only had photo's of the band members featured in this double page spread because they didn't feel the need to have other photo's of unimportant stuff.
Codes and Conventions.
This articles fits with magazine because it's a music magazine and they are a band that have been featured in the magazine because they have new albums coming out.
Target Audience.
This article has been made for people who like Green day and are interested in when they are going on tour also it is for people who want to by their new album.

Textual Analysis Double-Page, BASS Mag
Double-Page Spread
Layout.
The effects this double page are that it makes you more interested in the life of Lee Pomery. The ratio of text to image is about 20:80. on this double-page sprea my eyes are drawn to the writing and to the head of the guitar thats in the picture, i am drawn to the writing because it is at different angles and fits together like a jigsaw puzzle i think it is very interesting to look at. i am also drawn to the head of the guitar as the way it has been photographed because it looks like it is coming out of the picture and it drew in my attention. there aren't any sub-headings in this article.
Text.
The language that is being used are informal because it's not a letter it is more of a casual thing. In this article has no alliteration it also does't metaphors or any other languages techniques.
Image.
The way this image has beeen taken and they way it has been placed on the page is different and very unique. The way the photo has been taken it looks like the head of the guitar head is coming out of the page and Lee's head is really far away. The clothes his is wearing are casual but smart as he is wearing a shirt and jeans but doesn't have the button done up on the shirt which makes it casual. There is only one image being used for this double page sperad there aren't any little ones of him playing the guitar, but thre are on pages further in the magazine.
Codes and Conventions.
The codes and conventions being used in this magazine are guitars, as the magazine is called BASS it is a good idea to have guitars on the front cover and through out the the magazine. also as the magazine is called BASS the article on Lee Pomery is good because he plays base guitar for take that, but you never see him, he is normally behind the stage along with the other band players.
Target Audience.
I think the Target audience for this magazine is people who are interested in guitars and musical intruments. I would say that it is for people who are most interested in bass guitars most.

Textual Analysis, Contents Page KERRANG Mag
Textual Analysis
Layout.
The layout of this contents page is very basic nearly boring. There is one big image taking up half the page, they have done this so people hopefully wont realise that there isn't alot of writing on the page.
Colour.
The colours they have used for the contents page are dark colours to go with the type of music it is and with the bands they have featured in the magazine.
People.
People that are featured in the contents page of the magazine are the people who have articles in the magazine about there day to day life and if they have anything special happening in their life.
Background.
The background of the contents page is the same as the background of the front cover, it is a light grey colour. It looks like a sheet of metal.
Wording.
The wording that they have used for the contents page is simply, nothing to complex because people don't want to read a novel when they just want to know which pages they want to read. Under each page number it tells you about what is on each page.
Framing.
The framing for this contents page is the numbers for the pages with articles on it.
Overall Style.
The overall style of this contents page is good and i also think it is appealing to the eye. i feel that people like to read this page as it is easy to find what you want to fine.

Textual Analysis, Contents Page BASS Mag
Textual Analysis
Layout.
The layout of this magazines contents page is very different to normal ones, this one doesn't have the numbers going up in order they have them cut up into sections. The sections are interviews, essentials, gear, regulars and techniques.
Colour.
The colours they have used for the contents page are colours that go well with the colours of the guitars, the titles are red and the writing is black. I feel red goes with most things.
People.
The people they have used for the contents page are people who are feature in the magazine, in this case it is Lee Pomeroy. There is a huge photo of him holding two guitars on one of the pages so people will know he is a big part of the magazine.
Background.
In this edition of the BASS magazine, there isn't a background, it is plain white.
Wording.
The wording that they have used for the contents page is simply, nothing to complex because people don't want to read a novel when they just want to know which pages they want to read. Under each page number it tells you about what is on each page.
Framing.
The framing to this contents page has only been done for one side of he page, and it is only a few pictures down one side. This magazine doesn't really have a frame on the contents page.
Overall Style.
In my opinion i don't like the overall style of this contents page i think it looks to empty and i would prefer it if it had a background to lighten up the page.

Textual Analysis
Layout.
I don't like the layout of this contents page, they have done it in rows and nopt in coloms i would read down the page as it says the pages go on, but they have done it the other way around. this for me confused me the first time.
Colour.
The colours that they have used for the contents page are very cool, the base colours is a dark purply bluey colour and they have the writing in bright colours so they stand out agauinst the background.
People.
There aren't alot of people featured in the contents page, there are only 2 or 3 poeple who have big stories and they are small photo's, there is more writing about whats on the pages than who's on the pages.
Background.
The background of this contents page i really like as it's like a stary night, although the colours are alittle different, the sky is more purpley and slightly pink then in to blue as it fades down to the bottom.
Wording.
The words that the contents page contains are simply, nothing to complex because it's the contents page and it's not an article. they have done this because they don't want you Tto0 open the magazine and get lost o the first pages they want it to be easy to find your way around.
Framing.
On the contents page they haven't really got a frame as there isn't much to frame they have short and sweet paragraphs which are 4 or 5 lines long to give you a quick taste of whats gouing to be on that page. Altough some would say that the photo's around the edge of the page could be classed as a frame because its almost like a border.
Overall Style.
I feel the over all style of this contents page is good and i like it, i like how they have a stary night as the background and how they have used bright colours for the titles.

Textual Analysis, Bass
Textual Analysis
Layout.
The layout of this magazine is appealing to the eye, it has the mast head at the top in the background behind Lee Pomeroy's head. Also Lee is holding to bass guitars, this goes well as the magazine is called 'BASS' .
Colour.
The colours that the producers of 'BASS' magazine have used are bright and vibrant colours. They have used blues and reds. the mast head is red and the cover luines are blue.
People.
The celebrity that Bass magazine hs decided to put on the front of there cover is Lee Pomeroy he is a bass player who is well known in the music world. I feel it is good to show some one who is a bassest holding 2 basses and on the front cover of bass magazine.
Target Audience.
I think the Target audience for this magazine is people who are interested in guitars and musical intruments. I would say that it is for people who are most interested in bass guitars most.
Clothing.
The CLothes that Lee Pomeroy is wearing are smart casual but they are more casual than smart because he is weraring a shirt but it's not ironed and its slightly scruffy. I feel it is a good match to the type of music and to the style of clothes of clothes he ios wearing i can see the clear link.
Background.
THe background on this magazine as it has been on all of them is plain white, they have done this so the main photo and the writing stands out.
Wording.
The words they have use on the front cover of this magazine are very eye catching and draw you into reading the magazine. Aslo they have made them bright colours for the same reason of drawing you into the magazine and they want you to buy it.
Shot Type.
The shot type on the front cover of this issue of DJ magazine is a medium shot, it's not a close up of their face and it's not a long shot where you can see their hole body you can see from their hips up.
Framing.
The writing on this magazine has been placed around the edge and is acting like a border which frames the magazine by coming in from the side of the magazing of which it is on. The producers of the DJ magazine have done this so it looks liuke the magazine front cover has a frame, i think this is very effective and makes the photo in the middle stand out more.
Overall Style.
The overall style of this magazine is well presented and i feel it is very appealing and if i was interested in music and bass guitars or guitars in general would by it because it has information in containg facts about guitars and other muscial intruments.

Textual Analysis, DJ magazine
Textual Analysis
Layout.
The layout of this magazine is different because there isn't cover lines round the out side, they are on the bottom half of the front cover. Also the mast head is in the top left corner. There is the name of the celebrity in a box on the front, i think they put it in a box so it will stand out and you know what the name is of the celebrity.
Colour.
The colours that 'DJ' magazine have used for the front cover are very calm colours. They have used mostly blues, using blues shows what kind of music the magazine is. The music in this magazine isn't to hard rock and it isn't to hippie, it's somewhere in the middle.
People.
The person on the front of this magazine isn't well known in normal life but he is well known in the music industry. Pete Tong has been a dj on radio 1 for 20 years.
He has been used for this magazinefor obvious reasons as he is a dj and it is a magazine on dj's.
Target Audience.
The target audience for this magazine will be people who are interested in dj's and becoming a dj. The front cover tells you that in the magazine there are decks and sliders for sale and who you can contact so you know how to make it as a dj.
Clothing.
The clothes that Pete Tong seems to be wearing are just normal casual clothes because dj's aren't going on the tv and to been seen so they don't have to dress up smart, so they dress casual for work.
Background.
The background on the front cover of this DJ magazine is plain white to make the blue stand out. Also it has numbers going from the background into the foreground. The number they have used is 20, they just keep repaeting it for effect, the reason they use number 20 is because he has been working at radio 1 for 20 years.
Wording.
The language that this magazine has used is all about music and different types of music. There isn't alot of text on the front cover of this magazine.
Shot Type.
The DJ magazine has used a medium shot, they have used this type of shot because you can see his hole body, also it makes him looks powerful as he is taking up alot of the front cover.
Framing.
This front cover doesn't really have a frame around the photo because the photo is slightly to the right. Although the writing is on the bottom it has been set so it comes in from both sides of the page so its like there is a frame around from his wait down.
Overall Style
I like this over all look of this magazine it is very inviting to the person as it is calm colours and it well layed out. I think the layout goes well with the writing, it isn't small writing and a huge photo when the photo is the main part of the magazine, or the other way around i think it is a nice balance of the to.

Textual Analysis, Heat Magazine
Textual Analysis

Layout.
On the front cover of this magazine the mast head is not at the top like most magazine's, it is slightly more to the centre but still coming from left to right. There is a photo of Robert pattinson and his girlfriend Kristen Stewart who are best known for starring in the twilight saga, they are feature on the front of the magazine because there is an article of them in the magazine.
Colour.
The colour that is used for the mast head is the original colour of heat magazine, hot reed. the rest of the colours are used to make the magazine stand out on shops shelves so people will read it, also the colours of some of the cover lines are used so they will go will with the theme of twilight as the main article of the magazine is twilight.
People.
Robert Pattinson (aged 26) and Kristen Stewart (aged 22) are featured in this magazine for 2 reasons, because their new twilight saga breaking dawn is coming out November 2012. another reason they are featured in the magazine is because Kristen cheated on Robert with the directer of the twilight films and she has now admitted it.
Target Audience.
The target audience for this magazine would be for people who are interested in the celebrity culture. They get to find out what celebrities do in the day to day life.
Clothing.
The photographers that take the photo's for the front covers dress the celbrities in the lastest fashion so when people read the magazine they will want to look like the celebrities and they will by the same clothes.
Background.
The front cover of this magazine doesn't really have a background it is just white but the cover lines act as a background as they are bright and colourful. Also at the top of the magazine there is a band of red with more about what is featured in the magazine.
Wording.
The wording that has been used in the mgazine isn't complex and book like it's more simple and quick short bursts of information. The magazine has done this because it doesn't want to bore the reader with long paragraphs and stories which go on for pages and pages.
Shot Type.
The shot type they have used for the front cover of this magazine is a used-close up, you can see from their waist down. They have used this shot so you can recognise the celebrities who are on the front of the magazine which will encourage you to be it.
Framing.
Normally the photo's are in the centre and there are text boxes round the sides giving it a frame. However on this magazine the photo is not in the centre it is on the side and the majority of the writing is on the left.
Overall Style.
This magazine i feel works well overall as the colours all match there aren't any conflicting elements. Also all the styles work well together.

Textual Analysis, Keerang
Textual Analysis
Layout.
The magazine i have chosen is an issue of kerrang with Billy Joe the lead singer from the band 'Green Day' on the front cover. He is pointing to a sign in his hands that says 'Green Day', it has been scribbled on in red. as you can tell from him pointing at the sign shows he is trying to advertise his band. The facial expression his and 'ooh' face, which is showing he is excited which means that the band is exciting so people want to listen to there music. The mast head 'KERRANG' is in bold writing and it looks as if it is made out of glass and has been smashed. The cover lines are in bold writing so they stand out and the tag lines stand out aswell.
Colour.
The mast head is in a bright yellow so it will stand out on the shop shelf. Also on the sign he is holding the words green day are in red this is still a bright colour but it has different meanings; love, hate, danger. the greybackground makles the mast head and other parts of the magazine stand out.
People.
Billy Joe Armstrong is 40 and he has been in the music industry for 25 years. The image that the magazine has used is an iconic image because it a picture of a person. He is a well know music artist but onnly within a certain genre with poeple, so people who are into R&B and pop music wont be interested in Punk rock and Garage Rock, the music that he makes and plays.
Target Audience.
I can see that the target audience is indie, pop rock because of the clothes he is wearing and the type of adverts are round the side of the centre picture.
Clothing.
The jacket he is wearing is black, you can't see the rest of his clothes becaus eof the sign he is holding and because the photo bleeds off the page. Also the clothes he is wearing link to the indie genre of music artists.
Background.
The background looks like a sheet of metal, it goes well with the theme of the magazine and the type of music that 'Green Day' preduces. i think it would have been better if the background was green as it will match the name of the band.
Shot Type.
The shot type is a close'up of Billy Joel, it is a head on shot of him and it shows him from the waist up. they have done this so you can see his face clearly and recognise him immediatley.
Framing.
As you can see the image of Billy Joel is central and they have put the mast head behind him so it's almost like he is coming through a frame they have made with the text around the sides of the front cover.
Overall Style.
The language of the magazine fits in with the type and goes well with the offers and the language links into the genre.
Our College
Farhnam College,
We think we should use a photo of the front of the college as the front cover photo because it represents Farnham college.
It shows the college in a good way and shows the Farnham sign.
It shows the outside of the college on the front page so as you go further into the magazine you’ll go further into the college.
The Fields,
This shows the college has a field where you can play football and other sports or spend your frees on the provided benches. This represents the college as ‘green’ and shows that it is also an active college, and provides for sports. This shows how the college has good facilities and provides places to play sport.
The Courts,
I think we should put the pictures of the courts in the magazine because it shows the three sections of the college. It represents each part of the college, but it should not be put as the front cover as they are not the main building. I think these photos should be in the magazine because they are important.
The Restaurant,
This photo of the restaurant should be used because it shows the facilities of the college eating area. It also shows a calm and affable area to socialise when needed. This photo should be used because it shows where everyone eats and sits during there frees.
