Summary and Conclusion

Summary and Conclusion

So far I have looked at a lot of areas of magazines to help me create the perfect set up on mine. The first step I took was doing 5 textual analyses’ for the front cover, contents page and double page spread of different music magazines. This helped me because I could see exactly what different genres there are and how they are all laid out with a mixture of colour schemes. Also I could look at the content more closely and see what language features were used. This is important so that I have interesting content in my magazine and readers will be attracted.
I used the 2 questionnaires that looked at target audience, layout and content so I could see what exactly the audience was and what they wanted. I also made graphs for all of the questions so I could see exactly what proportion of the audience liked what. The last thing that I have done so far is 2 mood boards featuring front covers and contents pages so that people can see different genres together.

Codes and Conventions Essay

Codes and Conventions.

Understanding Genre in Music Magazines

Understanding Genre in Music Magazine

Genre.
Definition- Is that which defines a 'type' by its characteristics or in the form of media texts by shared codes and conventions.

In music magazines Genre is a specific target audience. There are a few of the genre's I have recongised.

POP - e.g. Top of the pops
Deffinition- music of general appeal to teenagers; a bland watered-down version of rock'n'roll with more rhythm and harmony and an emphasis on romantic love.

INDIE ROCK- e.g. NME
Definition- Indie rock is a genre of rock music that originated in the United Kingdom and the United States in the 1980s.

DRUM and BASS- e.g. Bass Music Magazine
Definition- Drum and bass(D&B) is a type of electronic dance music which emerged in the mid 1990s. The genre is characterized by fast breakbeats, with heavy bass and sub-bass lines.

Textual Analysis Double-Page Spread, KERRANG Mag

Double-Page Spread

Layout.
The way this double-page spread has been layed out is drawing my attention to Billy Joel as he is in the middle and is stood with wide eyes and is holding a CD. the ratio of text to image i feel is about 30:70, this is because there are 3 members of this band and they have all been featured on this page. In this double-page spread they have used subheadings for you to know what to look for, if your looking for something particular about green day you just have you find the right subheading and it will tell you.

Text.
The type of words the have used on this double page spread are the words that you would have in a conversation, they are informal. they aren't words that would be used in a letter so they aren't formal they are casual. The content of this story is about how they are getting old and how they might be getting to the end of there run in the music industry but then again they may continue on till the are ancient.

Image.
The way the images have been been put together is the way they would stand if the were on the stage doing a gig, Billy is in the middle and the other two are on the other sides. The dominant photo on this double-page spread is the on in the centre of both pages as it has billy Joel. The other images that have been used for this double page spread are the other members of the band, they have only had photo's of the band members featured in this double page spread because they didn't feel the need to have other photo's of unimportant stuff.

Codes and Conventions.
This articles fits with magazine because it's a music magazine and they are a band that have been featured in the magazine because they have new albums coming out.

Target Audience.
This article has been made for people who like Green day and are interested in when they are going on tour also it is for people who want to by their new album.

Textual Analysis Double-Page, BASS Mag

Double-Page Spread

Layout.
The effects this double page are that it makes you more interested in the life of Lee Pomery. The ratio of text to image is about 20:80. on this double-page sprea my eyes are drawn to the writing and to the head of the guitar thats in the picture, i am drawn to the writing because it is at different angles and fits together like a jigsaw puzzle i think it is very interesting to look at. i am also drawn to the head of the guitar as the way it has been photographed because it looks like it is coming out of the picture and it drew in my attention. there aren't any sub-headings in this article.

Text.
The language that is being used are informal because it's not a letter it is more of a casual thing. In this article has no alliteration it also does't metaphors or any other languages techniques.

Image.
The way this image has beeen taken and they way it has been placed on the page is different and very unique. The way the photo has been taken it looks like the head of the guitar head is coming out of the page and Lee's head is really far away. The clothes his is wearing are casual but smart as he is wearing a shirt and jeans but doesn't have the button done up on the shirt which makes it casual. There is only one image being used for this double page sperad there aren't any little ones of him playing the guitar, but thre are on pages further in the magazine.

Codes and Conventions.
The codes and conventions being used in this magazine are guitars, as the magazine is called BASS it is a good idea to have guitars on the front cover and through out the the magazine. also as the magazine is called BASS the article on Lee Pomery is good because he plays base guitar for take that, but you never see him, he is normally behind the stage along with the other band players.

Target Audience.
I think the Target audience for this magazine is people who are interested in guitars and musical intruments. I would say that it is for people who are most interested in bass guitars most.

The layout of this double spread page has been laid out with Pete tong in the middle and slightly to the left. in the top left hand corner the title is in block capitals and in red so it will stand out from the background. the right hand side of the page is full of writing.

Colour.
The colours that have been used for this double page spread are bright red and white. the background is a black white and the t-shirt that Pete Tong is wearing a red t-shirt and the title along with the background for one of the strips of text on the far right hand side of this double page spread.

People.
There is only one person featured in this article because the whole article is done on Pete Tong. This article talks about his job at Radio, it talks about when he was a DJ in ibza. This Article also talks about his personal life.

Background.
The Background of this double page spreed is plain white. They have made it plain white so that they could make the red that they have used for his T-shirt.

Wording.
In this article they are talking about Pete Tong and his life in and out side of his job as a DJ at Radio1.

Framing.
For this double-page spread there isn't a frame going round the page there is just one collum on the far right and it has a red background with white writing on it.

Overall Style.
I like the overall style of this double-page it is very appealing to the eye and i like the colours they have used, i think they work well together, the way the have put him in a t-shirt with red on then used red for the title and  the background is white which is the same colur as the pattern on the t-shirt Pete Tong is wearing.
